Commissioner Roland Fransson is led down a winding path where the clues lead to missing millions from the region's coffers, a desperate doctor with gambling debts and a madness that drives people to commit unforgivable acts.

At the same time, Roland's daughter Anna, 14 years old and confined to a wheelchair, is drawn into the course of events and is forced to take matters into her own hands. It all culminates in a dramatic hunt in Västerbotten's hinterland.
